Known as “working art” since its 1949 exhibition at the Detroit Institute of Arts, this practical desk system by Charles Eames and Ray Eames reflects their enduring approach to functional, accessible modernism. Produced for Herman Miller, the Eames Desk Unit combines a zinc frame with birch plywood surfaces, balancing industrial clarity with domestic versatility.

This example features a double-deep configuration with three front drawers - including a file drawer with rails - and two rear shelves, offering a flexible and highly usable storage layout. Finished in black panels with birch construction, the unit maintains the system’s original modular logic, allowing for left- or right-hand orientation depending on use. The desktop has been replaced with an oversized ply surface, providing expanded working space well suited to contemporary work-from-home environments.

The piece shows wear consistent with active use, particularly across the desktop and lighter surface marks throughout the frame, though it remains structurally sound and visually strong as a functional workhorse. While we have noted this as a Herman Miller product, Modernica has also produced a licensed reproductions, though are indistinguishable from the original HM product line.
