Prototype 3 Leg Dining Table in Birch and Burgundy for IKEA
1970-1980s production.
A rare and highly unusual prototype dining table believed to have originally been developed for IKEA during the 1970s–1980s. The design is defined by its sculptural three-leg bent birch structure, with each leg flowing inward toward the center of the table and connected through three segmented 120-degree birch plywood sections finished in a rich burgundy laminate.
Echoing the warmth and structural clarity found in the work of Alvar Aalto, the table balances playful geometry with highly practical proportions. Its compact circular footprint and uncommon three-leg construction make it particularly well suited to smaller kitchens and dining spaces, while still comfortably accommodating three dining chairs or up to six stools.
Thought to have remained a one-off example before production was discontinued, the piece carries a distinctly experimental quality representative of late modern Scandinavian design exploration of the period.
The table remains in very good overall condition, with light wear consistent with age and use. The frame and tabletop present cleanly throughout with no notable damage. The table may also be disassembled for easier transport if required.
