Set of 5 Grand Prix Chairs in Teak* by Arne Jacobsen for Fritz Hansen
1957-1970 production.
Beautiful set of early model Grand Prix chairs, rooted in history and when Arne Jacobsen was gaining prominence as a furniture designer both in Denmark and in the international scene. The Grand Prix chair from 1957 is the only shell chair by Arne Jacobsen designed without steel legs exclusively. Crafted entirely from wood, it reflects Jacobsen’s pursuit of a lightweight, modern chair that would appeal to those who preferred a warmer, non-metal look in their interiors.
Not created for a specific architectural project, the Grand Prix chair debuted in a series of exhibitions across Denmark and Europe in 1957. It was hailed in the Danish press as a technical breakthrough, and at the Milan Triennial it received the exhibition’s highest honor - the Grand Prix - a name the chair has carried ever since.
This set features original molded ply seat, rubber base mounts and nickel legs in great shape for age. Seat shell in great condition overall, though some seats are showing minor cracking at base.
*Veneer believed to be teak, a limited and early production offering by Jacobsen and the manufacturers of the time.
