Set of 4 Libellula Chairs in Burnt Umber Leather by G.Carini for Planula
1970-1980 production.
The Libellula chairs by Giovanni Carini for Planula, designed in 1970, offer a refined balance of structure and lightness, where industrial materials meet a quietly expressive form. This set of four features slender enamelled frames with suspended leather seating, creating an airy, sculptural presence that feels both grounded and effortless.
Carini’s cantilevered design lends a natural sense of ease, with the leather seat and backrest gently supporting the body while maintaining a clean, minimal profile. A subtle yet distinctive detail, the laced backrest - secured with fine metal cords - introduces a tactile, almost graphic element that speaks to the designer’s thoughtful approach.
Produced by Planula, these chairs reflect the experimental energy of 1970s Italian design, while remaining timeless in their restraint. Equally suited to dining spaces, work areas, or as standalone accents, they bring a sense of quiet sophistication and considered craftsmanship - an understated statement for those drawn to design with presence and history.
Across the complete set, the leather has been redone in it's entirety, keeping faithful to the original details of the chairs from new. Grommets in the leather were also replaced, while the original sling springs were kept original. The frames overall present well, though have some small areas of chipping in the enamel.
